Social Housing: Origins, Concepts and Instruments

With a focus on the Latin American context since the post-war period, this course departs from the perception that the provision of social housing is at a standstill in the region. On the one hand, architects tested new housing models in projects that still retain their experimental character, on the other, the methodological diversity that emerged from this production was not properly absorbed by governments and planning institutions, especially in programs put in place in recent decades. In this context, the course aims at educating its participants in the analytical and conceptual tools needed to the formulation and critque of social housing projects. Through lectures, analytical exercises and field visits to important precedents, this course offers a twofold contribution to the professional (practice) and academic (research) training of the participants.
